Brazilian Marathon of Residents reaches its 4th edition

Traditional event among residents of the country is now open for registration

The word “Marathon” is always associated with preparation, resilience, competitiveness, dedication, among many others. It became a sport modality, having its origin from a Greek legend, in which the Athenian soldier Phidipedes, would have run 42km between the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce to the people the victory of the Athenian armies over the Persians and, after accomplish his mission, he died of exhaustion.

However, in the radiological community, the word “Marathon” has even more meanings: knowledge, cooperation and interaction, as these are the objectives of the radiological knowledge competition that has become a tradition among residents.

The Brazilian Marathon of Residents in Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (MBR) has become, in a short time, one of the most anticipated events within the specialty and, this year, arrives in its 4th edition, after having more than 20 teams participating in 2018.

The objective is to promote the approximation between resident doctors and trainees from different institutions, encourage the mastery of radiological knowledge, promote the exchange of experiences among the numerous participating institutions, whether in Brazil or abroad, in addition to boosting academic activity and fostering the spirit of cooperation and teamwork.

“I think this CBR initiative contributes to the training of residents, as it encourages residents to dedicate themselves even more to their studies and training. In addition, it provides an environment for integration between us”, says Dr. Thiago Baraviera, one of the members of the winning team last year.

For Dr. Gláucia Michelis, who was part of the winning team in 2017, participating in the Marathon “is worth it in every way. We learn when we force ourselves to face a diagnostic challenge because we create an emotional memory and I believe this is one of the best ways to consolidate knowledge. Of course, if the team is inspired on the day and the prize comes, even better. I assure you it is worth it, we are very grateful to CBR for this opportunity”, he highlights.

MBR19, which is sponsored by the company bayer, requires separate registrations from the XLVII Brazilian Congress of Radiology (CBR19) and is scheduled for 12:10 pm on October 12, the last day of the event.

How to participate?

Registration is free for those registered for the Congress and must be done by email mbr19@cbr.org.br  until October 5th, or on site.

Teams formed by three participants can register, without the need to belong to the same institution or be in the same training year. Two or more teams from the same service are also allowed. The groups will have 40 seconds to answer each question, all involving radiological images. Last year, more than 20 teams from all over the country participated.

It is worth mentioning that only doctors who are attending one of the three official years of residency or improvement are allowed to participate. As a result, fourth-year residents and seniors (R4 and A4) will not be able to apply.

As in previous editions, as an incentive and prize, the members of the winning team will receive registration, air tickets and lodging to participate in the Annual Meeting of American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS 2020), in Chicago (USA), from May 3 to 8.

In 2018, there were more than 20 participating teams, from different locations in Brazil. In the June edition of this year, the CBR Bulletin told about the experience of the winners at the Annual ARRS Congress, who were together with members of the Board of the College during the event.
