Radiological Protection Forum takes place over two days at CBR19
On October 10 and 11, during the Brazilian Congress of Radiology (CBR19), the Radiological Protection Forum was held. Debating the importance of justifying the exams, especially with the ever-increasing advancement of technology, the forum brought important discussions to the participants. The importance of awareness and safety was also placed on the agenda, both for radiologists and for physicists, technicians and patients.
The Forum addressed topics such as Radiological Protection in Pediatrics, Tomography and Nuclear Medicine and Interventionism, and the round tables included important names in the area in Brazil and worldwide.
“This event, which was an initiative of Dr. Alair, president of the CBR, is essential to give a good illustration of the importance of the justification of the exams, since we have more and more exams being performed every day, more and more advanced technologies that are really of great importance for the patient. However, it is important that there is awareness that they must be justified and optimized, maximizing their benefits”, said Dr. Simone Renha, physicist and member of the Radiological Protection Commission.
Dr. Mônica Bernardo, radiologist and member of the commission, reinforced that “the involvement of all the characters to request and perform the exam, as well as the radiologist to clarify all the follow-up for the patient is very important to raise awareness”.
International professionals involved, such as Dr. Astrilde Avis da Graça Jamisse, director of the Radiology service at Hospital Central de Maputo, Mozambique, and representative of the Mozambican College of Radiology, highlighted the notable changes regarding the matter. “What I noticed that was different about this event is that in one year the Commission for Radiological Protection of the CBR worked and has been working very hard. It is a union that, somehow, in countries like ours, where we are in the initial phase, fascinates us, makes us want to learn”, he pointed out.
Dr. Astrilde also spoke about the dialogue between the two schools for a partnership to be signed and what CBR19 provided her. “We already had this promise from Dr. Alair, president of CBR, and the intention is to establish a solid partnership that guarantees us not only the creation of a Hospital Committee at the Hospital de Maputo, but also the advancement in the scope of radiological protection from the political and ministerial point of view of the two colleges. In summary, I came to gather experience, to ensure that, in a brief way, the CBR and our college implement a protocol and sign a partnership for several projects, as I believe that radiological protection is just the first”, he highlighted.
Two other highlights at the event were Dr. Helen Jamil Khoury, professor at the Department of Nuclear Energy at the Federal University of Pernambuco, and Dr. Alejandro Nader, who reinforced that the event is a milestone for everyone involved. “The CBR embraced the idea of radiological protection, which is critical to ensuring the greatest population benefit from diagnosis with the lowest dose,” said Dr. Helen.
Dr. Alejandro Nader, official technician of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), congratulated the CBR initiative for the active participation of his commission. “This demonstrates that there is a culture of safety in the organization and in Medicine. This is very important and one of the strategic lines of the IAEA to work in this area all over the world”, he concluded.
Telemedicine and Professional Defense were also addressed in the format of discussion forums
The other two forums that took place at CBR19 also brought up current and highly relevant topics for the specialty: Telemedicine and Professional Defense.
Telemedicine was moderated by Dr. Alexandra Monteiro, first secretary of the CBR, and dealt with the following topics: CFM Resolution nº 2.107/2014 for Teleradiology; General Data Protection Law and Telemedicine; Secrecy and Confidentiality of digital information; Medical error through Telemedicine and Social Networks and the Doctor.
The Professional Defense, which ended the programming of CBR19 forums, was coordinated by Dr. Cibele Alves de Carvalho, director of professional defense at CBR and moderated by Dr. Alair Sarmet Santos, President of the College. The topics discussed with the public were: CBR's role in defending the specialty; Interference of operators/insurers in the decision of physicians; Contracting: what physicians should know and CBR's participation in the technical chamber of Diagnostic Imaging at CFM.
