“The objective of screening is to detect asymptomatic breast cancer at its inception, before it spreads to other organs, increasing the chances of a cure with appropriate treatment. Early detection associated with advances in systemic treatment is responsible for two thirds of the reduction in mortality from the disease in developed countries [1]. Mortality in developed countries has been falling since the 90s [2] and in Brazil it has been on the rise during this period [3]”, says the document.
