Radiologist Day is celebrated on November 8th

Radiologist Day is celebrated on November 8th. This day was selected because on November 8, 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays. The date is celebrated worldwide due to an initiative by European Society of Radiology (ESR), together with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American College of Radiology (ACR), and supported by various entities and societies around the world.

Importance of the profession

The radiologist plays a fundamental role in medicine and for patients. Radiologists can work in both the diagnostic and therapeutic segments. In the diagnostic area, the radiologist works in the interpretation of image exams, in addition to assisting doctors in the treatment of pathologies. In the therapeutic segment, it works in the treatment of diseases, such as cancer and in the prevention of injuries, focused on sports.

Evolution of machines

Through the discovery of the German Wilhelm Röntgen, x-ray machines were developed, however, the machinery did not generate high quality images and still exposed patients to high risks of radiation. At the time, it was not yet known about the effects that ionizing radiation has on the human body. Over the years, devices have evolved a lot; currently, we have analog devices with digital image processing (CR) and most completely digital devices (DR). In addition to the evolution in diagnostic imaging, there has also been a significant improvement in the safety of the patient and those who operate the machines, both of whom are less exposed to radiation, as today we know the damage that radiation can have on humans.

Difference between Radiologist and Radiologist Technician

Many people confuse or do not know the difference between the two professions. The radiologist technician is the one who conducts various diagnostic imaging procedures, except ultrasound. The radiologist is the one who interprets and compares the results of exams carried out by technicians using diagnostic imaging equipment. In other words, the radiologist is directly linked to the accuracy of the patient's diagnosis.

In addition to the differences in functions, there is a disparity between the training of professionals. The radiology technician requires complete higher education and a technical course in the area. The radiologist must have a degree in medicine, have completed at least three years of medical residency and also pass the title test.

The Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) thanks and congratulates all radiologists for their dignified and beautiful profession.

Happy Radiologist's Day! Together we are stronger!
