CBR obtains injunction against doctor who spread fake news about breast cancer

The Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) has obtained an injunction in the public civil action filed against Lana Tiani, a doctor who disseminated false information regarding breast cancer. The injunction was granted this Friday (November 1) by the 9th Civil and Business Court of Belém (PA).

This injunction provides for the removal of the video from the air and of advertisements for treatments for diseases that have no scientific evidence from Lana Tiani's social networks. The doctor is also prohibited from advertising that mammography exams are harmful to health.

The injunction states that the danger of harm caused by Lana Tiani was proven: “by promoting discrediting of scientific methods of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, as well as in the undue dissemination of a treatment method, developed by a non-medical professional, without any scientific proof and, mainly, in the immense and irresponsible risk to the health of the population, which, in concrete terms, may be irreversible”.

About the false information spread:

The CBR emphasizes that the mammography exam procedure is safe and does not cause diseases. Faced with a queue of more than 77 thousand Brazilian women, with a waiting time that can exceed 80 days in some places to have a mammogram in the Unified Health System (SUS), the CBR clarifies some points:

1 – Mammography is a safe and effective examination, which must be performed according to protocols established by the largest medical entities in the world and under the supervision of doctors, especially specialists in radiology and diagnostic imaging.

2 – There is no recognized scientific evidence that attributes a mammogram exam to being a risk factor for the development of breast cancer or any other organ or part of the human body, nor the cause of inflammation or other health disorders for women.

3 – Women’s access to mammography exams can save lives and avoid more expensive treatments in advanced stages of breast cancer, causing stress for patients and the management of the SUS.

CBR remains vigilant about the dissemination of fake news that could harm the health of the Brazilian population!
