Today is Radiologist's Day

Radiologist's Day is celebrated today (November 8). The date was selected because on November 8, 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of X-rays. The day is celebrated worldwide due to an initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), together with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American College of Radiology (ACR), and supported by several entities and societies around the world. This year, the institutions will celebrate the 12th International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2024).

IDoR 2024 aims to raise awareness about the value of radiology and the radiologist's contribution to better patient care and safety. The Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) supports this brilliant initiative.

Importance of the profession

The radiologist plays a fundamental role in medicine and for patients. Radiologists can work in both the diagnostic and therapeutic segments. In the diagnostic area, the radiologist works in the interpretation of image exams, in addition to assisting doctors in the treatment of pathologies. In the therapeutic segment, it works in the treatment of diseases, such as cancer and in the prevention of injuries, focused on sports.

Difference between Radiologist and Radiologist Technician

Many people confuse or do not know the difference between the two professions. The radiologist technician is the one who conducts various diagnostic imaging procedures, except ultrasound. The radiologist is the one who interprets and compares the results of exams carried out by technicians using diagnostic imaging equipment. In other words, the radiologist is directly linked to the accuracy of the patient's diagnosis.

In addition to the differences in functions, there is a disparity in the training of professionals. Radiology technicians require a college degree and a technical course in the field. Radiologists, on the other hand, must have a medical degree, completed at least three years of medical residency and passed the specialist qualification exam.

CBR actions for the evolution of radiology in Brazil

The CBR is committed to national radiology, which is why it promotes several actions and works hard to advance the profession. The College recently launched a campaign to value radiologists, with the campaign slogan “Rad is the essence”. The campaign highlights the importance of the specialty in patient care and calls for public policies that recognize the essential role of the specialty in strengthening the health system. Also in the second half of this year, the CBR launched the campaign against fake news, which aims to combat false news in the health area. The College values patient safety and reinforces its commitment to Brazilian health.

CBR's actions go beyond radiology; our concern is with Brazilian public health. This year, we promoted the 'Solidarity Radiology' Campaign in celebration of Pink October. The campaign was a social action for the early detection of breast cancer, providing free mammograms, biopsies and ultrasound exams through partner clinics that made themselves available for the campaign.

The Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) thanks and congratulates all radiologists for their dignified and beautiful profession.

Happy Radiologist's Day!

Together we are stronger!
