Radiologist's Day is celebrated on November 8th.

On November 8th, we celebrate our day, Radiologists' Day. The date was chosen because on November 8th, 1895, the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of X-rays. The day is celebrated worldwide thanks to an initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), along with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR), and supported by various entities and societies around the world. This year, the institutions will celebrate the 14th International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2025).

The IDoR 2025 aims to raise awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care and improve public understanding of the vital role radiologists play in healthcare.

The importance of our profession.

Radiologists play an essential role in medicine and for patients, working in both diagnostic and therapeutic areas. In diagnosis, radiologists interpret imaging exams and assist physicians from other specialties in treating pathologies. In therapy, they are fundamental in treating diseases such as cancer and in preventing sports injuries.

Differences between a Radiologist and a Radiology Technician

Many people confuse or don't know the difference between the two professions. A radiology technician conducts various diagnostic imaging procedures, except for ultrasound. A radiologist, on the other hand, interprets and compares the results of the examinations performed by the technicians on diagnostic imaging equipment; in other words, the radiologist is directly involved in the accuracy of the patient's diagnosis.

In addition to the differences in roles, there is a disparity in the professionals' training. A radiology technician requires a high school diploma and a technical course in the field. A radiologist, on the other hand, needs a medical degree, at least three years of medical residency, and must also pass the specialist certification exam.

CBR's actions actively contribute to the evolution of radiology in Brazil.

The Brazilian College of Radiology (CBR) is committed to national radiology, therefore it promotes various actions and works hard for the evolution of the profession. Last year, the College launched a campaign to value radiologists, the campaign's motto was "Rad is essence". The campaign highlights the importance of the specialty in patient care and calls for public policies that recognize the essential role of the specialty in strengthening the health system. Also in 2024, the CBR launched a campaign against fake news, which aims to combat fake news in the health field. The College values patient safety and reinforces its commitment to Brazilian healthcare.

CBR's actions go beyond radiology; our concern is with Brazilian public health. This year, as last year, we promoted the 'Solidarity Radiology' Campaign in celebration of Pink October. The campaign was a social action for the early detection of breast cancer, offering free mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds through partner clinics that made themselves available for the campaign.
