The ESOR AIMS Course, a partnership between the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) and the European School of Radiology (ESOR), an educational institution linked to the European Society of Radiology (ESR), will take place on August 25th and 26th, at the Medical Association of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte (MG). Entries can be made by site http://www.cursoesor.com.br. The maximum number of participants is 120 and the official language is English, without simultaneous translation.
This year's theme will be “Radiological Emergencies”, for the first time addressed in the seven years of the event in Brazil. “It's a hot topic at the moment, which interests many professionals, as many work in hospitals and have to deal with emergencies in their routines”, says the national coordinator of the course, Dr. Luciana Costa Silva (MG). Local coordination will be in charge of Dr. Cibele Carvalho (MG), president of the Society of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging of Minas Gerais (SRMG) and director of Professional Defense at CBR.
This year's edition will have a slightly different format from the previous ones, since it will be two full days, with twelve theoretical classes and twelve workshops, instead of nine, and two classes by each European professor instead of one. The workshops, considered the great differential of the course, will take place after the theoretical classes and will divide the members into three groups of up to 40 participants for the discussion of everyday clinical cases related to each topic.
The course will receive renowned international speakers, such as Dr. Marc Zins (France), who works at Hôpital Paris Saint Joseph and is a member-at-large of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (Esgar); the Dr. Majda Thurnher (Croatian working in Austria), former president of the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR); The Doctor. Cristian Lowe (Austria), from the area of Cardiovascular Radiology; and Dr. Maria Raissaki (Greece), pediatric radiologist who will address trauma and traumatic and non-traumatic abdominal emergencies in children.
Two of the Brazilian professors who will teach in the course spoke about their participation: Dr. Alice Coelho Brandão (RJ), specialist in Internal Medicine who has been a speaker in previous years, and Dr. Dante Escuissato (PR), scientific director of CBR and specialist in the field of Thorax. In addition to them, Brazil will be represented by doctors Ademar Paes Junior (SC), director of the Brazilian Association of Diagnostic Imaging Clinics (ABCDI) and specialist in Head and Neck, and Conrado Cavalcanti (SP), coordinator of the Accreditation Program in Diagnosis by Imagem (Padi) and musculoskeletal specialist.
Check out the interview with doctors Alice and Dante:
– What would you like to highlight about the course?
Dr. Alice – This is one of the courses in which the radiologist learns the most due to the great integration with the professors in theoretical and practical classes.
doctor Dante – Due to the format of these courses, in addition to the classes, the case discussion activities between lecturers and participating physicians are interesting.
– The theme of the course will be focused on Emergencies. How important is the topic for radiologists?
Dr. Alice – It is very important to be prepared to identify these pathologies in order to intervene positively in the treatment. Recognition allows the attending physician to treat adequately and quickly, reducing morbidity and mortality. Especially in women, this means the possibility of maintaining fertility in some cases.
doctor Dante – Clinical situations related to patients in emergency services are usually serious. In these cases, attending physicians and radiologists often have little clinical data and diagnostic imaging tests play a fundamental role. Therefore, it is essential to know the most common diseases in these patients and their presentation, facilitating early diagnosis and treatment.
– What are your expectations for giving lectures this year?
Dr. Alice – They're great. The course, from the teacher's point of view, is also very positive. It allows you to deepen your knowledge on the topic and teach more and better, in addition to greater interaction with colleagues.
doctor Dante – This opportunity will allow me a great chance to interact with ESOR and consequently with European radiologists.
– What are the benefits of exchanging with European professors during the event?
Dr. Alice – There are many, as it is an extremely positive coexistence. Colleagues share their experiences in an academic setting.
doctor Dante – I believe they will be able to bring their personal experiences and the services in which they work. This is an opportunity for our societies to strengthen relations and contacts to be made between European and Brazilian radiologists.
– What could you highlight about your classes at this year's event?
Dr. Alice – Classes will be very hands-on. The theme is broad. Because of time, I will address the most important causes of emergencies in gynecology, in order to prepare the radiologist to know how to identify and grade the severity of each case.
doctor Dante – I will address chest trauma. In this sense, the subjects that I consider most relevant will be traumatic pleural, pulmonary and mediastinal abnormalities, with the aim of discussing diagnostic issues of the patient who enters the emergency service and also the evolution of lesions.
