After CBR action, doctor is forced to remove video with false information about mammography

Preliminary decision meets the request made to the Court of Pernambuco by the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging

A video with misinformation about mammography, produced by a doctor from Olinda (PE), was taken down last week after the Court granted a request for a preliminary injunction made by the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR). In the same decision, Judge Carlos Neves da Franca Neto Júnior, of the 2nd Civil Court of the District of Olinda, ordered the doctor to publish a retraction video on the same profile.

The profile of physician Aluízio Farias, author of the video with misinformation, has around 7.4 thousand followers. The content with false information, which gave rise to the public civil action, had been published on October 19, 2024, and is no longer on the defendant's social network. The judge's decision also provides that the physician must produce new content, but this time with correct information.

According to the decision, the retraction video must be no less than one minute long and must clarify that mammography is the gold standard method recommended by Brazilian medical societies for safe, effective and essential breast cancer screening for early detection of the disease. The content is different from that originally published, which stated: “mammography is very inaccurate. In addition to having a very high level of radiation and being capable of causing cancer due to said radiation.”

The retraction must remain available on the doctor's official profile for at least 30 days. In case of non-compliance, the defendant must pay a daily fine.

Mammography is safe – According to the CBR, mammography examinations must be carried out according to protocols established by the largest medical entities and under the supervision of doctors, especially specialists in radiology and diagnostic imaging.

Regarding radiation levels, the CBR emphasizes that radiation emission is low and that it would be necessary to have 400 mammograms over the course of a lifetime to significantly increase the risk of breast cancer.

The CBR considers mammography essential for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, as it can identify the disease in its early stages, increasing the chances of a cure in up to 95% cases.
