ECR 2022 will pay tribute to Manoel de Souza Rocha, former president of CBR

Former president of the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR), Professor Manoel de Souza Rocha will be honored at the European Congress of Radiology (European Congress of Radiology – ECR) 2022, one of the biggest and most important world events of the specialty, which will be held from July 13th to 17th, in Vienna, Austria. He will become Honorary Member of the European Society of Radiology (European Society of Radiology – ESR), responsible for the congress.

Manoel de Souza Rocha is an associate professor of Radiology at the University of São Paulo (USP). He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at USP and did a residency in radiology at the Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo. Working at the largest university hospital in Brazil, he was responsible for introducing the participation of radiologists in multidisciplinary team meetings and today has daily educational activities with radiology, surgery and gastroenterology residents.

He served four years as scientific director and two years as president of CBR, between 2017 and 2018. During this period, CBR made great efforts to offer educational activities to radiologists from different regions of Brazil and to develop new methods of online education, with special interest in use of social media. As president of CBR, he also took the initiative to strengthen the relationship with ESR, which resulted in the “Best of ECR” honor.

Since the beginning of his professional career, Professor Manoel de Souza Rocha has shown great interest in teaching medical students. This devotion has resulted in receiving more than 20 Annual Teaching Awards. He is an Honorary Member of American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), Society of Radiology of Piauí, Society of Radiology of Ceará, Society of Radiology of Pernambuco, and was awarded the CBR Gold Medal.

One of the pioneers working with computed tomography in the country, he is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, 50 book chapters and two books on abdominal radiology. He also co-edited five books on radiology and gave more than 700 lectures in Brazil and other countries, among a number of other accomplishments.
