Doctor who spread fake news about breast cancer is banned by CFM

The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) has ordered the total precautionary ban on physician Lana Tiani, who last year published false information about breast cancer on her social media profile. The penalty was published in Official Gazette of the Union on February 20, 2025.

The ban comes after an ethical-professional process instituted by the Regional Medical Council of Pará, due to the doctor's statements, who went as far as to say that breast cancer “does not exist”. In her content, she also claimed that mammograms cause breast damage and that screening tests would be harmful to health. In addition, she disqualified the Pink October campaign, whose main objective is to raise awareness among the population about the importance of early detection of the disease.

CBR Action – At the same time, the Brazilian College of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging (CBR) filed a public civil action against Lana Tiani, reporting the dissemination of false information about breast cancer and requesting the removal of the misleading content. On November 1, 2024, the 9th Civil and Business Court of Belém (PA) granted a preliminary injunction in favor of CBR, ordering the doctor to immediately remove the videos and advertisements for treatments without scientific proof.

Furthermore, the court ruling prohibited the professional from stating that mammography is harmful to health, reinforcing that her statements represented a serious risk to the population. The injunction highlighted that the doctor's conduct promoted the discrediting of scientific methods of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, exposing women to irreversible risks.

Prohibition and consequences – With the precautionary injunction imposed by the CFM, Lana Tiani is prevented from practicing medicine throughout the national territory until the ethical-disciplinary process is concluded. This measure aims to protect patients and combat the dissemination of false and unscientific information.

The CBR reiterates its commitment to disseminating information based on scientific evidence and reinforces that mammographic screening is essential for the early detection of breast cancer, contributing to the reduction of mortality from the disease.

The entity will continue to work to ensure the defense of good medical practice and the safety of the population.
